A Few Things You Should Know About Yacht Trailers

Boat hauling isn't ordinary logistics. The wrong trailer means a 15,000-euro gelcoat repair. Here's what I've learned building these for shipyards over the years.

Yacht and boat hauling is nothing like a standard lowbed operation. The moment any steel touches the hull, the gelcoat cracks and the repair starts at ten thousand euros. That's why shipyards that actually do this don't use a standard lowbed — they invest in purpose-built yacht trailers.

We've been building yacht trailers in Konya for Mediterranean shipyards for years. I'm writing this for anyone who's wondered "can I use a lowbed to haul a boat?"

Four ways a yacht trailer differs from a standard lowbed

First, the body profile. A standard lowbed platform is flat; a yacht trailer has a V-shaped cradle that matches the boat's hull profile. If you put a boat on a flat platform you have to stack wooden chocks or cushions, and the risk of slippage is real.

Second, hydraulic suspension. Boat weights range from 5 to 50 tonnes, and the ability to lower the trailer 200 mm makes a big difference. It lets the boat settle onto the cradle at the shipyard without a boatlift or crane. On our trailers, this suspension is standard.

Third, contact surfaces. Every contact point has EPDM rubber padding. Steel-gelcoat contact cracks the finish; repair runs 5-15 thousand euros. We've updated our cushion choices over years of customer feedback and now offer three different durometers.

Fourth, platform height. Standard lowbed runs 800-850 mm; a yacht trailer is 600-700 mm. Critical for bridge clearance and especially for loading angle near water.

Trailer type by boat

A 10-metre speedboat or RIB needs a two-axle light yacht trailer. Small marine firms usually go for this class — good price-to-performance. A 10-15 metre sailing boat (sloop, ketch) needs a 3-axle V-cradle model. Mid-yachts at 15-25 metres need 4 axles and hydraulic suspension — above 20 tonnes you can't realistically work with 3 axles.

Anything above 25 metres — mega-yacht territory — is custom build. No standard model; cradle, axle count, suspension design are all redrawn for each boat.

How the operation works

A shipyard-to-sea operation is tight. The boat is measured first: LOA, max beam, draft, true weight — we verify these against the boat's certificate, real numbers matter. Then the route is planned, bridge heights, turn radii, and gauge permits checked.

At the shipyard, a boatlift or crane settles the boat onto the cradle, which has been pre-adjusted to the V profile. The boat is fastened with cushioned straps at 4-6 points. Hydraulic suspension lifts the trailer to road-ready position.

If going to the EU, "long load" signage and signals are added. At the destination port, the reverse: lower the suspension, release straps, water-launch.

Insurance — often missed

Standard trailer insurance does not cover boat cargo. The operation needs two policies: marine cargo for loading-unloading and transit damage; liability for third-party damages caused by the trailer.

Shipyards that skip this detail get a major shock on the first incident. Not impossible to recover from, but getting the policy first is dramatically cheaper.

Yacht export from Türkiye to Europe

If the boat was purchased from a Turkish seller outside the EU Customs Union, T1 transit is required. With an EU member seller, A.TR is enough. Marine cargo policy always. Boat registration or purchase invoice, CE/RCD certificate (for EU sale) required.

Summary

Yacht hauling isn't standard work. A standard trailer isn't appropriate. V-cradle, EPDM cushions, hydraulic suspension, sub-700 mm platform — if you can't find all four together, you're not buying a yacht trailer.
